The mission of the Iraqi Mutual Aid Society is to foster the well-being and self-sufficiency of Iraqi refugees and immigrants in the Chicago-metro area: easing their transition to life in the United States, forging connections between Iraqi and American society, and facilitating the preservation and exchange of Iraqi culture.

                                                                                                                     Iraqi Mutual Aid Society


The Iraqi Mutual Aid Society (IMAS) is a secular, registered 501 (c) (3) organization founded in 2009 to foster the well-being and self-sufficiency of Iraqi refugees and immigrants in the Chicago-metro area.  Our programs include Welcoming and Orientation, Jobs and Career including English as a Second Language, Arabic Language Institute, Youth Outreach and social events.

We are looking for new board members to develop and grow our organization.   We are interested in board members who share concern for the well-being and integration of Iraqi refugees and are able to commit at least 5-10 hours per month.  The initial board term is 4 months subject to annual elections. 

In particular, we are looking for individuals with a wide range of education, skills and life experience, including

·         Accounting background and skills

·         Public relations skills

·         Business background

·         Academic background

·         Engineering, IT or technical background

·         Medical, social services, immigration services professionals

Position Responsibilities

·         Provide board with advice and assistance in her/his individual areas of experience and expertise

·         Prepare for and participate in board meetings and workshops, usually monthly

·         Serve on at least one committee, prepare for and participate in committee meetings and activities

·         Advocate for IMAS mission and programs, including fundraising and outreach

·         Work cooperatively with other board members and staff

Position Qualifications

·         Bachelor’s degree or five years professional work experience

·         Previous board experience a plus

·         Demonstrated ability to work with an internationally diverse group

·         Knowledge of Arabic, Assyrian or Kurdish helpful but not required

This is a volunteer position.  Please email a letter of interest explaining why you would like to become a board member, your ideas for the organization and your resume to Saad Usif, Chair at saadusif@iraqimutualaid.org.   Candidates will be notified via email if they are chosen for an interview and membership to the Board.
