Superior St. Chicago, IL Iraqi Mutual Aid Society invites you to the fifth annual Middle Eastern Poetry Festival, hosted by the Poetry Foundation. Join us to hear poets read original poetry in their native languages and to celebrate Middle Eastern culture in Chicago. We welcome you to take part in our efforts to strengthen bonds within our community and to foster cultural exchange in our city. English translations will be provided for all poems. Refreshments and a reception will follow.
On the Table Community Conversation May 16, 2017 Hosts Around Chicago
IMAS is supporting 20 conversations over a meal around Chicago about refugee issues. The Chicago Community Trust’s On the Table is an annual forum designed to elevate civic conversation, foster new relationships and inspire collaborative action across the region. These small group, mealtime conversations are an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities our communities face, and aim to inspire new ways we can work together to make communities stronger, safer and more dynamic.

2016 IMAS Annual Gala December 1, 2016 Alhambra Palace
The Iraqi Mutual Aid Society, a refugee and asylee service organization, held a fundraising gala on December 1, 2016. The gala celebrated the Middle Eastern cultural heritage of our clients and honor the work of former IMAS board member Pamela Nehring. This year our gala honored the work of Pamela Nehring of Daley Mohan Groble, who served on the board of IMAS from 2010 to 2016 as Secretary and Treasurer. The gala included dinner, a special appearance by Iraqi violinist Raysan Ismail from Sweden's New Vision Orchestra, and dancing, with music by an Arab-American DJ. IMAS clients from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan spoke about their experience as refugees and their hopes for the future.

The Iraqi Mutual Aid Society held the Fourth Annual Poetry Festival again in collaboration with Poetry Foundation. This year, we invited the winners of the Poetry Contest as well as participants in the What We Carried project. The event included Iraqi and other Middle Eastern poets in multi-lingual Arabic, Assyrian, Fasi, Kurdish and English recitations featuring: Twana Twana – Arabic Ali Mohammad - Arabic Imad Boulos - Arabic Yonan Houma – Assyrian Majid Naficy – Farsi Fuad Ridha – Kurdish Refugee Youth Poets - Arabic and English
The Illinois Holocaust Museum is hosting a photographic exhibit of What We Carried: Stories of Iraqi Refugees, a collaborative project with the Iraqi community including the Iraqi Mutual Aid Society and award winning photographer, Jim Lommasson. Jim Lommasson has photographed those few important personal items that have survived the long journey from Iraq to the U.S. The exhibit tells the story of these journeys through photographs of the things that are so special that they were carried all the way here.

Peace! In these troubled times, we will ever achieve peace for ourselves, our families, our community, our world? Iraqi and other Middle Eastern poets described what peace means to them in their own language. The Iraqi Mutual Aid Society held the Third Annual Poetry Festival in collaboration with Poetry Foundation.
Middle Eastern Refugee Transition Assistance Program Gala, October 15, 2014 Supporters of IMAS gathered at the Alhambra Palace to celebrate the work we are doing and to hear a fascinating presentation on preserving Iraqi cultural heritage by Dr. McGuire Gibson of the Oriental Institute. Dr. Fuad Ridha also shared some poetry in Arabic and English.
Visit by Senator Dick Durbin, September 29, 2014 US Senator Dick Durbin visited the IMAS offices to hear about our work and the impact we are having on the lives of Iraqi refugees. IMAS clients and staff also shared their stories of life in Iraq and the experience of coming to the United States.
