Ali is a refugee from Iraq who came to Chicago in 2014. Having had his university studies interrupted by the violence in his country, Ali arrived determined to complete his education:
“When I arrived in the United States in the fall of 2014, I had no family and only a few friends to help me. However, I soon heard about IMAS and visited their offices to see if they could offer me assistance.
IMAS helped me apply for jobs and later, when I needed to move, they showed me how to locate a new apartment. I have also attended cultural events and had the opportunity to volunteer with IMAS. But the biggest area where the organization has helped me has been my education.
Because I was forced to leave Iraq, I was not able to complete my university studies there. When I came to the United States, I knew that continuing my education was one of the most important steps for building a successful future for myself. Right away, IMAS staff began helping me to develop an educational plan and to identify the steps I needed to take to reach my goals.
They recommended that I enroll in ESL classes and described the process of transitioning to community college, and later to a four-year university to complete a Bachelors Degree. At first, I was unsure of what I would study, but through IMAS I was able to get information on different options and settled on nursing. The student financial aid system was completely new to me, but the IMAS staff explained the process to me, helped me fill out the application, and worked to resolve issues that delayed my grants.
This year I received my Associates Degree from Harry Truman College and transferred to Resurrection University in order to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing. After I graduate, I look forward to a rewarding career. I am deeply grateful for all the support and guidance that IMAS has given me along the way.”
