"I am a refugee from Homs, Syria. My family and I came to Chicago in 2016 from Jordan. None of us spoke any English when we first arrived.
I heard about IMAS from friends and neighbors who referred me to the organization after learning I was having trouble finding social work assistance. I was impressed after my first visit at IMAS.
Most of the staff, who are refugees from Iraq and Syria themselves, understood the challenges and obstacles I was facing. Meeting them was not only helpful but also very comforting as it gave me the opportunity to reconnect with my old community.
I first met with Othman Al Ani, the Client Services Manager at IMAS, who guided me through my transition to life in the United States. Othman helped me and my wife to manage our travel loans, apply for disability benefits, and learn how to pay our utility, medical, and phone bills. Othman served as an important source of information when it came to navigating daily life here. Most recently, I came to IMAS when my family and I were applying for our Green Cards.
I am beyond grateful for the invaluable services that Othman and everyone else at IMAS have provided to me and my family. The amount of respect and care that IMAS has shown towards my family is unparelleled in our experience in the United States."
“IMAS has helped me with many things since I came to Chicago. I came with my whole family and IMAS helped us in many ways. Whenever I have had questions about documents I have brought them to IMAS. They have helped me apply for Medicaid, citizenship, and food stamps. I have tried going to other organizations in the past for help with benefits but they made mistakes in the paperwork. I brought the papers to IMAS and they corrected them. IMAS helped me with my travel loan because my payment had not been received. IMAS helped me find out that I had been sending it to the wrong address and we resolved the issue. I would not have been able to complete my benefits applications because there were many words that I was not able to understand.
I always recommend to friends to come to IMAS for help with benefits and other issues. Some people do not know English or they are having problems with their benefits. I especially recommend that older refugees come to IMAS because it is harder for them to understand the paperwork. Some other organizations require fees or donations before getting services. I appreciate that the services at IMAS are free and are available to people of all religions and nationalities. IMAS was the only organization that helped me with all of these issues.”
